Best Time to Sell a Car: How to Time Your Sale
The price of a used car is not static. It moves with demand, and demand follows the seasons. Selling when interest in your type of car is at its peak can bring in several thousand kronor more for exactly the same car. Here is what drives the timing.
The season matters
Different cars peak at different times of year. Matching the sale to when buyers are looking is the simplest way to improve the price without doing anything to the car.
Spring and early summer
High season for car sales in general. Convertibles, sports cars and smaller cars are most in demand when the weather turns. Many people have also received a tax refund, which boosts purchasing power. If you want to sell a fun summer car, this is your window.
Autumn and early winter
Ahead of winter, demand rises for all-wheel-drive cars, estates and SUVs. A car with good winter credentials, ideally with winter wheels thrown in, often sells faster and for more in the autumn than in the middle of summer.
December to February
A quieter period with lower demand, partly because buyers spend their money on other things around Christmas. The exception is winter cars. If you have a car that is not seasonal, it can still pay to wait until spring.
The car's own life cycle
Beyond the season, a car loses value over time and miles. Two thresholds are particularly worth thinking about: sell before a round mileage figure (many buyers react to numbers passing an even threshold), and before an expensive service or upcoming inspection (besiktning) that would otherwise eat into the value.
Market conditions
Sometimes bigger shifts affect prices, such as changing demand between fuel types, new tax rules or a shortage of used cars. Such situations can temporarily lift the value of certain cars. You do not need to hit the peak, but it is worth knowing that the market moves.
How to know what your car is worth right now
The best way to decide whether it is the right moment is to test the market. Request bids from several dealers. It is free and does not commit you. If you get strong bids, demand is good right now; if the bids are weak, it may pay to wait for the right season.
Frequently asked questions
When in the year is it best to sell a car?
Generally spring and early summer, when demand is highest. All-wheel-drive cars, estates and SUVs often sell best ahead of winter.
Should I sell before an inspection or a service?
Often yes. An upcoming expensive service, or an inspection with known remarks, can lower the bid because the buyer factors in the cost.
How do I know if now is the right time to sell?
Request bids from several dealers. Strong bids mean good demand right now; weak bids can be a signal to wait for the right season.
